its not about whether he or she is family its the bond you make with them. if you make a bond with a dog then you would think of it was your family even if it has a tail and you don't.

Some of your arguments are stupid. Yes, if I were forced to choose between saving a human life vs. my dog, no doubt I would try and save a fellow human being. These dogs were abandoned by their owners. I live in Florida I've gone through 5 hurricanes a few of them major. I would never leave my dogs behind. They are my family. I'd never put a human life above theirs but no way on this earth I'd leave them behind to fend for themselves. They wouldn't leave me behind.

this is why you suck at being a human jimmy, dogs will never turn their back on you and are totally dependent on humankind and you'd just look the other way? what a waste of flesh you are.

Based on my experiences I would save a canine over a human 95% of the time. Humans rely on nobody, dogs rely on humans.

First of all the government had no evacuations plans for pets.
Many people were forced to leave their pets behind.
The cops later took animals and shot them to death.
Those officers were filmed laughing while shooting and killing people's pets.
I left the region last year after Gustav for fear if another Katrina happened my current dog I rescued would end up as target pratice by some redneck hillbilly cop.
I love my dog to much to let that happen to him and yes some people are evil.

I've gone thru five hurricanes like I said. There are no evacuations plans for pets here either. None of the evacuation areas allow pets. So like I said I'd never leave my pets. N.O. is different vs. where I live there homes for hurricanes pretty much suck. Gone thru five here in Florida, newer home, dogs with me, winds of 150+ mph. Home was fine dogs were with me in bed. Never would I leave them,even if my house were built of straw they'd go wherever I go.

@Grrngirl.
You sound like good people to me.
Rex and I moved far away from the ocean and New Orleans last year.
But prior to that year I had extra dog food and clothes packed and water for us to drive to Texas if not further nothing in my home is worth both of us not being together.
If a storm is coming pack a bag and extra food and water for yourselves lock up the house and leave to someplace safe.
Take care and god bless from Rex and Happymike.

@Lotusleaves
Sorry but Rex is my first priority in life to me.
Most people treat me like I have no feelings due to my disability.
I talk funny and often run into trouble with people who don't understand when I speak and many don't know how to sign.
But Rex didn't know me but still gave me a chance to love and teach him what a forever family is.
I'm just the lucky guy with the dog who loves to sit with me and just be there for me.

I'm from New Orleans and I had to experience Katrina. The reason why a lot of families left their pets at home is because first of all nobody expected majority of the city to flood for days. Also, traveling with pets in the car is a severe pain in the ass especially if you have a family of four or more. I had to leave my cats at home (we left 3 months supply of food and water at every level of our 3 story house in case of flooding) because the hotel we were going to didn't allow animals.
A lot of people ... ( 1 month ago by HolyCrapanAsian)
A lot of people with pets in the poorer parts of the city couldn't even afford to leave. Lots of people drowned while their pets survived. Also, the army shut down the city and no one could return to the city for 6 months once you evacuated without a permit which we somehow managed to get. Overall, New Orleans was seriously not prepared for Hurricane Katrina. In case you're wondering my house didn't flood and my cats are perfectly fine but got really really fat from all the food.

I hope that all the pets' owners can take their pets with them when the next disaster happen, they are part of the families, life hard enough for those pets and the owners to go through terrible storm then they had to be superated. I wish the government do more for all the victims during the Katrina, I still cry when I watch all the news today about all the people that had to suffer during that time. Hard to believe that was in this country to see people screaming for help for water and food.
